If you spray a perfume at 9 AM and can still clearly smell it on your skin or clothing at 7 PM, it has demonstrated considerable longevity. However, this does not mean it has been projecting strongly for all ten hours. This distinction is important because fragrance performance changes over time. A perfume may begin with a noticeable burst immediately after spraying, gradually become softer, and eventually remain as a close-to-skin scent.

The chemistry behind this process is related to the evaporation and release of volatile fragrance molecules. Different molecules have different physical and chemical properties, meaning they do not evaporate from the skin at the same rate.

What Is Perfume Projection?

Projection describes how far a fragrance radiates from your body and how noticeable it is to people around you.

Imagine spraying perfume before going to work. During the first hour, someone sitting several feet away can notice your fragrance without being directly next to you. That is strong projection. As the fragrance develops, projection normally decreases. The perfume may still be present, but instead of filling the surrounding space, it becomes more intimate and closer to your skin.

The word comes from the French term associated with a trail left behind, and in perfumery it describes the lingering aromatic impression that remains in the air around a wearer. For example, imagine someone walks past you in a hallway. You notice their fragrance for a moment after they have passed. That lingering trail is what fragrance enthusiasts commonly describe as sillage. Sillage is related to projection, but they are not identical.

Projection is primarily concerned with how strongly and how far the fragrance radiates from the wearer at a particular moment. Sillage is more about the trail or aromatic presence left behind as the wearer moves through an environment.

A fragrance can therefore have noticeable projection without creating an especially persistent scent trail, or it can create an attractive sillage while becoming relatively intimate when the wearer is standing still.

Concentration is an important consideration, but it should not be treated as the only predictor of performance. Applying perfume to moisturized skin can provide a better surface for fragrance wear, particularly if your skin tends to be very dry.
